Southern University’s Department of Sociology is sponsoring an after-school support program for students in grades six through 12.
Called Southern University Empowering Youth Choices, the program will include social, academic and recreational activities, according to director Riad Yehya, a sociology professor.
The program will include field trips, he said.
The program seeks to reduce premarital sex, decrease out-of-wedlock pregnancy, retard sexually transmitted diseases and enhance personal, interpersonal and academic skills.
Yehya said the program, funded by a grant of about $70,000 from the state Department of Social Services, will be based at Crestworth Middle School sixth grade, 2555 DeSoto Drive.
The program begins today and runs through Feb. 28 from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Up to 60 students can enroll.
